“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”
~ Alice in Wonderland (Lewis Carroll)

About Karen Filthaut
I'm a Canadian artist who has called Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia home. I'm inspired by the natural beauty of the Canadian prairies and mountains. I work primarily in acrylics and oil, using rich textures and expressive color to capture the mood and movement of the landscape.
Community Engagement & Leadership
As President of the Sylvan Lake Art Society, I help organize events that bring local artists together and encourage public engagement with the arts. I also started the In the Footsteps of Monet Facebook group, where artists share weekly work and support each other in creative growth.

Educational Background & Teaching

My art education began with Fine Arts at the University of Calgary and later evolved into specialized training in photo retouching. Sessions with prominent artists such as Randy Fehr, Robert Bateman, Keith Smith (student of the late Carl Rungius), and Ron Parker set a foundation in art theory that I was able to build on with practice. A career in photo retouching taught me necessary skills in mixing colours from primaries. Teaching has become a fulfilling part of my practice—I’ve led beginner classes, senior-focused workshops, and sessions that emphasize the therapeutic power of painting. After receiving a liver transplant in 2015, I experienced the healing effects of creating.
